This Book is Free and Yours to Keep: Notes from the Appalachian Prison Book Project (2024) is a collection of letters and artwork sent by people in prison to the Appalachian Prison Book Project over the past 20 years. The collection also contains creative writing by people who have participated in APBP book clubs and WVU courses in prison.
Awarded the 2024 Weatherford Award in Nonfiction, This Book is Free and Yours to Keep communicates the importance of book and education access and encourages its readers to prioritize community over incarceration. You can read excerpts of Hugh Williams, Jr.'s preface and Dr. Katy Ryan's introduction to the book in the Inquest article "Decarceral Pathways: Free Books."
